Disclosure: I own a small number of shares in Apple.
When Apple launched the Apple Music streaming service in June, it included a built-in 24/7 Internet radio station called Beats 1. Beats 1 — which is managed by Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden and Julie Adenuga — broadcasts to over 100 countries from studios in Los Angeles, New York and London.
During Apple’s earnings call last month, CEO Tim Cook said millions of people have been tuning into Beats 1. Due to the popularity of Beats 1, it seems inevitable for Apple to launch more Internet radio stations. Fortunately, sources with The Verge said that Apple has licenses for up to five additional stations that are similar to Beats 1 without requiring renegotiations.
The Verge’s sources also pointed out that the per-play rate Apple pays for music on Beats 1 is higher than Pandora, meaning that more stations would be in the interest of labels. The new stations could potentially be set up in Australia or Asia to reach more time zones. Beats 1 features exclusive artist interviews and user requests via social media. And some of the celebrity hosts that have their own shows on Beats 1 includes Dr. Dre, Drake, Pharrell Williams and Jaden Smith.
