Many observers are wondering if MTV’s time has come. After upending the music business after its launch 29 years ago tomorrow, MTV is hoping for some sort of coda. But it would appear the on-demand world supplied by YouTube satiates the public’s need for music videos. Music videos, what a seemingly ancient art form. When MTV launched its service on August 1, 1981 (with the incredibly prescient “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles), no longer would the listener wonder what the songwriter was contemplating. Rather, increasing budgets would explore what could be visually done in the relatively short form pop song. Brilliant works by Michael Jackson and Madonna built their fan base by the millions. Even more ethereal artists like Peter Gabriel enjoyed exploring the boundaries of the genre. Some artists were ahead of the curve, having cut their teeth in a pre-MTV era with the burgeoning video technology. Devo, for instance, was genetically ready for MTV.
