For some time now the French have had a sort of cultural Maginot Line around their way of life, striving to preserve it at all costs. And who wouldn’t? One of the best health care systems in the world, comfortable state retirement, excellent infrastructure and public transport, preservation programs protecting the country’s “patrimony,” guaranteed state-directed holidays every year (which employers cannot revoke).
