Like many gamers, I have a way of lingering on the character creation screen. Even in a game like Fallout, where you basically never see your character after the first five minutes, there’s just a certain joy in making things right. Fallout 4 will be a little bit different, since it has third-person dialogue scenes, but it’s the same principle: you want to know something about this person that you’re going to spend dozens of hours with, get an idea of how they feel. And yet, no matter how much time I spend tweaking noses and eye spacing, I can’t help but break the illusion just a little bit when I get to the name. No matter the game, no matter the setting, no matter how dark or serious the game, my character always has the same name: “Butt.” If Fallout 4 is any indication, I’m not alone.
