You’ve got Lucy, and you’ve got the football. Every time someone sets out to adapt a major videogame franchise into a movie, we tell ourselves that this is going to be the one that isn’t awful. And yet it never seems to happen, derailed by some weird choice or another, either doomed from the beginning or blown apart at the end. Call it the Mario curse — we still haven’t really recovered from the videogame movie genre’s ur-flop. Right now, we’re concerned with Warcraft, Duncan Jone’s adaptation of Blizzard’s iconic RTS and MMO property: the movie is done, we’re told, and it’s not terrible. Maybe we’ll get to kick the football this time. But maybe not.
