The Resounding Whimper of the ‘Elder Scrolls Online’ Release

When it comes to fantasy RPGs, one name stands out above the rest, The Elder Scrolls. In 2011, Skyrim, the fifth installment to the series, sold over 18 million copies. The title before that, Oblivion which was released in 2006, sold over 7 million copies. That is a fantastic jump, doubling sales in just five years. Skyrim is widely considered the greatest fantasy game in the last decade, beating out Lord of the Rings for the honor. The Elder Scrolls series is one of the best-selling western fantasy series on the market. As such, it seemed only logical for Bethesda and ZeniMax to enter the MMO field.  When first released for PC, Elder Scrolls Online had a reported 770,000 users after just 3 months. Though, according to VGChartz, an online video game sales database, just over 600,000 copies of the PC version have been sold.  Now flash forward one year from the PC launch. The game is released on xBox One and PS4. Based on past success, numbers should be through the roof.  Yet, the game was treated to one of the weakest openings in recent history.
