The past year has seen many a negative headline about Twitter. You might be familiar with the Atlantic’s “eulogy for Twitter.” Many denounce Twitter as a fire-hose of self-promotion with little engagement and favoritism toward celebrity. However as this Twitter debate rages on, I continue to get value out of Twitter. I spend time on Twitter multiple times a day. I’ve used it as an individual and also on the brand side building customer support strategies and even answering tweets myself for a Fortune 100 company. There still persists a Facebook versus Twitter dialogue, as if they were they same thing. I’ve had an inkling that perhaps the people writing about the death of Twitter don’t spend a lot of time understanding and working with Twitter. I wonder if they publish Tweets but avoid engaging about other people’s tweets. They are then disappointed that fans aren’t going wild. What I’ve personally learned is that Twitter is only as valuable as you make it.
