In June 1968, Karl Philberth arrived at Jarl-Joset Station, a forlorn cluster of buildings near the center of the Greenland Ice Sheet. He had come here, at age 39, to investigate an ambitious but controversial plan: to store the world’s nuclear waste deep in the ice sheets of Greenland or Antarctica.
